Uncoupling, an insider’s guide to separation in New Zealand

Separation – Do you know your legal rights?

by | Sep 14, 2021

There’s not a chance I would have published a book using just my cobbled together knowledge and personal experience.

I spent three years working through the division of my relationship property, going down some expensive and unproductive paths to negotiate agreement.

Depending on the value of your relationship property, the percentage being used up in legal fees, revaluations, and accounting advice can be huge. Double that because both parties are paying fees out of the same lump of cash which could be more productively put towards a new life.

Using my own experience of the system, I found good information online – but not in one place! The New Zealand Law Society, Community Law, Citizen’s Advice and Women’s Refuge were all helpful and I found myself reflecting back on my own experience as I wrote.

When I had researched the legal section and put it together in a coherent and assessable way, I worked with my barrister Antonia Fisher QC to check ensure it was an accurate summary of the law in New Zealand. She even wrote a lovely reference for the book.
